Difficult Situation

How do I handle this?
My husband is laid off at his permanent job until one of his FBI clearences comes thru, and we do not know how long that will take. Until then I have him working for me. This Friday he should be getting a paycheck for $42, but apparently, when he worked for this company previously, he cashed his check, thought it was lost, then cashed the second check that was sent to him. So now he still owes this company more than $200 for the second check he shouldn't have cashed. We are counting on these paychecks for rent. My question to you is not, how do I pay for rent, we will pray and get by, no no no.....my question is this:
How do I tell my husband his check he is working very hard for, will not be coming as much as he thinks due to an incident 3 years ago? Any ideas? Please let me know, I am not looking forward to a very angry spouse this evening.
